Bonfire Night falls on a Thursday this year, so many of the bigger displays around Bromley are being held over the weekend that follows. Here is our guide to enjoying the fireworks safely and keeping your pets calm.
Bromley High School fireworks, Saturday 7 November
Bromley High School Parents Association is holding what it calls Bromley's biggest fireworks display at the school on Blackbrook Lane, Bromley BR1 2TW. The evening runs from 5.45pm to 10pm, with a funfair, food stalls and a bar. Tickets are sold through Eventbrite and are non-refundable, so check the listing before you go.
Running a display somewhere else in the borough? Send us the details and we will add it to our news.
Why an organised display is the safest choice
Last Bonfire Night, London Fire Brigade's control room took 831 calls, its busiest 5 November since 2016 and 20% more than the year before. Its advice is simple: find an organised display near you rather than holding your own.
If you are having fireworks at home
Only buy fireworks from a licensed shop, and check they carry a CE or UKCA safety mark.
Keep them well away from buildings, trees, people and animals. Never go back to a firework once it has been lit, and do not set them off after drinking.
Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby, and let used fireworks cool completely before you throw them away.
By law, fireworks cannot be set off between 11pm and 7am. On Bonfire Night itself the cut-off is midnight.
Check your bonfire for hedgehogs
Hedgehogs love to sleep in piles of leaves and wood at this time of year. If you can, build your bonfire on the day. If the pile has been sitting for a while, move it just before you light it and check it carefully with a torch. Never use petrol or other flammable liquids to get it going, and never leave a bonfire unattended.
Keeping pets calm
Walk dogs before it gets dark, and keep cats indoors with a litter tray. Close the curtains and put the TV or radio on to soften the bangs. Make sure your pet is microchipped with up-to-date details in case they bolt. If your pet gets very frightened, have a word with your vet well before the night.
Look out for each other
Fireworks can be hard for older neighbours, veterans and people who are sensitive to noise. A quick knock on the door to let your neighbours know when you are having fireworks goes a long way.
Have a safe and happy Bonfire Night, Bromley.
